Book Review: My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

✭✭✭✭✭ (5/5 STARS1!!JIOSZFLK)

Let me just gush about how much I loved this book.. and I totally did not expect to love it. (AT
ALL!!!)

I loved loved loved loved Sam and Jase's relationship. When Sam ran into Jase's arms after the disastrous car ride, I felt so safe, and I felt exactly how Sam felt. They were very mature, and I loved the condom purchasing, because that was hilarious. I loved the way they handled the sex and virginity stuff. It was a lot more refreshing than the stuff I've read before.

This book was not a typical chicklit. The twist's were great and intriguing, and the plotline was great. It may seem to start off as a typical romance book, but the real issue that comes up is adding oil to the fire.  It just made me love the book even more. Clay was a crazy asshole, and I loved Tim. I kind of wanted to kick him in the beginning of the book, but he just became precious and awesome. Oh, and Nan can go shove it. Academic dishonesty is not the way to leave what you hate behind.

Then, I felt that Samantha was very relatable, even though she did live a cushy life. She works two jobs; that is exactly like me, and she hates the smell of bacon, oil and coffee. Oh, did I mention that I work at a fast food restaurant and that I hate it too? She was super mature, and I understood all her decisions. Unlike some heroines...

Also, her mother was written really well. Grace came off as uptight, OCD, and neurotic, but I'm glad she did the right thing in the end. I understood her "EVERYTHING IS IN SHADES OF GREY SAMANTHA" logic, and I wish that the book stuck to that, instead of the somewhat happy yet vague ending.

However, all in all, this book really hit the spot, and can really surprise you. Highly recommended.

Book Review: A Midsummer's Nightmare by Kody Keplinger

★★★☆☆ (3.5/5stars)

Kody Keplinger's stories may be typical in their plot formats, but they stand out somehow with her unique writing. Her writing really captures the essence of troubled teenagers and I feel myself relating to them really well, even if I am nothing like them, I am a teenager too. The fucks, bitches, whores, may take a while to get used to, but I slowly accepted it. Because... that's how teenagers speak. Duh.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Maybe because Whitley was so crazy in the beginning and I really didn't know what to think of her. At times, I wanted to grab her shoulders and holler into her ear, saying "LOOK HERE YOU STUPID GIRL WHAT ARE YOU DOING STOP DRAGGING YOURSELF INTO THIS MESS"!

I also felt that her attitude really pissed me off, but I understood it... because I relate to her situation with her parents etc.

This is pretty realistic in terms of the whole family thing, and I think I really gave my heart to Whitley for that. I also really liked Nathan because he was such a cute dork, and Harrison (who I didn't expect to show up in this book)! He was so nice to Whitley and I'm glad we got to see more of him, because he was only mentioned in the passing in The Duff. In terms of the romance, you could say that it's very unrealistic, but at least it was written well. Having a one-night-stand with a boy at a graduation party, taking his virginity, and becoming his stepsister is very unlikely. But it was definitely fun and hilarious to read about. I had a lot of "Oh my god" moments while reading this.

Lastly, I thought that Kody Keplinger manages to capture the personalities of troubled teenagers well, but Bianca and Whitley are nothing alike. They may seem like it at first, but I went back to re-read The Duff, and they definitely are different. Bianca has friends, she's accepting, she's sarcastic, but she's soft. Whitley is just plain hard and it takes forever to crack that shell of hers. The way that Bianca and Whitley described Hamilton was so different, that I didn't even realize it was the same setting. Bianca never really mentioned it's "boring-ness" but Whitley really brought it out and made me sort of see the town in a different light.

All in all, I felt that Keplinger brought out her writing well in this novel, even if it wasn't a stellar one!

Book Review: Princess for Hire: A Farewell to Charms by Lindsey Leavitt

★★★★★ 5/5 stars!!!

This was such a lovely end to a gem of a series. If you just base this series off of it's appearance, then you are completely wrong. Yes, it is labeled as a "children's" book but it's a lot more mature than you would think it is, and the main character Desi is really mature for a 13/14 year old. I was NOT that mature when I was that old!!! Lindsey Leavitt should have at least made Desi 15/16... But oh well.

Anyways. This novel reaches beyond the scope of the hey-let's-just-invent-magic-for-the-sake-of-using-it-for-this-agency-and-the-plot-and-not-mention-it's-uses-for-world-peace-and-shit. It actually asks the question "If we have this magic, why don't we use it for the greater good of the planet? which is totally something that I don't see often. Did I mention that this is labeled as a children's book?

The ending to the series' conflict was realistic. Using subs' magic and stripping of their memories sounds reasonable to me, (I mean, for the sake of the plot of course lol) and if Facade had been doing it for so long, it would be unrealistic for Desi to suddenly just change everything. Genevieve offering them to run another branch of the company made sense, and I guess everything just wrapped up really nicely for me!

I don't get why Leavitt had to throw in that doubt of whether Reed was the one subbing for Prince Karl... but it did add some spice to the book. Reed and Desi are really cute! BUT I JUST CAN'T IMAGINE DESI AS A 13/14 YEAR OLD. Leavitt you are too mature to be writing about a 13/14 year old.

All in all, I really loved this series. The synopsis sounds really stupid and kiddish, but the prince/princess/royalty/magic thing is handled really well and there's some cute romance in it.

If you're looking for a guilty pleasure read or you're just bored out of your mind, read this. It's awesome :3 Leavitt is a surprisingly awesome writer.

Book Review: The Statistical Probably Of Love At First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith

First Impression
Alright. I'll admit it. I thought this was gonna be a light romance that takes place all on a plane where they get off and exchange #'s. TADA. HAHAHA. Well it does say that it takes place over a 24hour period. Flights to Taiwan take 12 hours okay? Nice cover by the way. Looked forward to reading this.

Rants
Okay okay. The romance wasn't really believable. I guess it could happen that you become super comfortable with someone you met for a few hours... and especially if you're setting right next to each other on the airplane. But it was a little too coincidental for my liking. Oliver was too perfect, and I didn't get to see more about him, but then again... twenty-four hours. I'll let this go.

Raves
What I really loved about this was the whole divorce-marriage-funeral thing. I could totally relate to it, since my relationship with my father is almost non-existant. When Hadley was describing how uncomfortable she was with the change with her two parents, I felt my heart ache in a way that I already experienced before. The HEA was expected and they came to terms with what they couldn't a little too fast, but the feelings were genuine.

One Sentence Review
I wish I could meet a guy for a few hours on the plane, follow him to his dad's funeral, have him follow me back to my dad's wedding reception, dance with me, kiss, and fall in love.

But that's never gonna happen.

Book Review: Nice Girls Finish Last by Natalie Anderson

Wow! Long time no see. :( I've been reading a Discovery of Witches for a whole week. Don't know why it took me so long to re-read it. Anyways. Read on!

To be quite honest, I thought this was gonna be crap. It was ok, actually! (better than ok.)

First Impression
So the cover is kind of. Um. You know. Crappy. HAHAHA. So I didn't have high expectations. So I just kept reading and reading. Let's just say, I wasn't impressed just by the summary or the cover.

Rants
I barely knew what the characters looked like!! Same issue as a lot of the books but I guess the relationship was more important right? Oh. And sex right after ten minutes of talking? I don't know if sexual attracting can be that sizzling. Right?

I mean, come on. I know the author let the relationship carry on AFTER the sex, but it didn't seem special, and it just seemed physical. I'm glad it was addressed though. It made the ~love~ seem more believable?

Raves
I love dirty history. God. I loved the background stories of the two main characters!! It makes it worth a second read. I thought the dirty history was gonna be some stupid thing, but it was actually pretty bad! I really liked that. Mmmhm. Two thumbs up.

One Sentence Review
Don't let the crappy cover and ten-minute-talking-lets-fuck first few chapters fool you, this book can worm it's way into your heart.

Book Review: Everneath by Brodi Ashton

★★★★★

The first part of Everneath sucks. And then Jack comes in, turns shit around and the last part of the book is just bah. Soul-tearing.

By the way, isn't Caputo a milk company or something? LOL. (I kept thinking this whenever they mentioned his last name.)

I have a few things to say about this novel though,

#1 The cover is crap and totally misleading.
#2 The summary is total crap as well and a total turn-off.
#3 Jack is amazing and the romance is mind-blowing.
#4 I was almost tempted to like Cole...
#5 and I need a sequel SO BAD.

I know some people read the summary and assume that the novel is all about her trying to escape but ends up in Cole's arms, but no. It's far from that. It's a novel about relentlessness, running, confronting mistakes, heart-wrenching romance and just sad and pure pure pure 100% desperation.

And the order this story is told in is simply breath-taking. The beginning is totally confusing and shit but as you keep reading you are just all asiofjasoifj sa:-00000000 . I love how the answers were finally given at the very end of the novel, and the history between Jack and Nik was so cute. And sad. Oh god. I can't think about the ending without safojoiafdsjoasi screaming!!!

Please read this.

Oh god. I can't believe I loved it, but I did!!!!

Book Review: Dragonswood by Janet Lee Carey

★★★★☆ (4/5 stars)

First Impression
I LOVE Janet Lee Carey. I first read Dragon's Keep while I was in Elementary School (or something) and I really really love the way she writes. I thought this was something related to Dragon's Keep, so I picked it up. Oh, and the cover is GORGEOUS. Way better than Dragon's Keep, that's for sure.

What I Liked
No character was PERFECT. THEY WERE ALL FLAWED IN GREAT WAYS. AND REALISTIC WAYS. (Like Meg and Poppy.) Garth (or w/e you want to call him, don't want to spoil anything) was amazing. He was such a kind and caring character, which is kind of cliche but I love his heart! He didn't judge anything by looks and he was still vulnerable, like any other man. Carey didn't write him as the perfect man, which is what I hate about some books.

Flawed girls with perfect guys? NO THANK YOU. BOYS ARE FLAWED  AS WELL.

I also LOVED LOVED LOVED how Carey wrote everything so OUT there. She didn't make any perfect girls, and Tess was not an exception. Her cauliflowered ear and blackened thumbs weren't healed ~magically~ in anyway, and Tess was totally not cliche.

I loved her resilience against Lady Adela as well. GOD I LOVED THIS!!

What I Didn’t Like
I saw everything a mile away. If you kind of follow the writing, you can tell that Tess isn't going to wed to some normal man. And if you think about Garth's hunting lodge... Well, DUH. I apologize if that spoiled anything!

But I hated how I never realized in the beginning, so that forced me to re-read the whole thing.

One Sentence Review
The characters were beautiful but I saw everything 10 god damn kilometres away.

Book Review: The Geek Girl's Guide to Cheerleading by Charity Tahmaseb

rating:★★★☆☆

Well that was better than I expected.

first impressions
I had pretty high hopes for this book, since some of the reviews really praised it... I actually bought the epub of this book, which kind of shows how desperate I was to read it. I put this one down for a few months and finally finished it today.

raves
okay okay. I loved the integration of Pride and Prejudice (I LOVE LOVE LOVE PRIDE AND PREJUDICE). I didn't realize how it fit in with the story until the very end and it just gave me a bunch of little grins. Oh, and Brian. Brian totally made me laugh. I loved Todd as well. What a quirky character. Jack seemed like a normal, and talented nice guy and he didn't really strike me as anything... except the last scene of the book was really cute. I loved it. I loved it!! I'LL ADMIT. I LIKED IT!! I think the characters were nicely developed.

Oh and the $3 rose thing? We do that too at my school. Haha. Liked it.

Also the bullying stuff? I liked it. Don't ask me why, but I LOVED THE BULLYING SCENES. AHAHA! SO REALISTIC.

rants
I'll admit it was cliche... but I don't have a lot of bad things to say about this book, except that it was really cliche. But it was nicely written!

So yeah. this was definitely better than I expected! 3.5 stars for me. :)

book review:Existence by Abbi Glines

RATING ★★☆☆☆

rants
This soulless book was pointless. All it did was follow the same formula of twilight and YA novels and added some deities and souls.

IT WAS MISERABLE. Half the time I was fighting a mad urge to throw my ereader and I was groaning at the scenes where Pagan was all emotional about Dank leaving. Then she gets sent to a loony bin.

And Pagan gave boring monotonous speeches with no contractions that made me gag.

This all sounds like BLOODY TWILIGHT.

1. male is inhuman, check.
2. male stalks woman in room, check.
3. male sings woman to sleep, check.
4. woman befriends other male for comfort from her love leaving, check.
5. AND THEN HE COMES
BACK TO SAVE HER FROM A PSYCHO FEMALE. CHECK.

TWILIGHT I SAY. TWILIGHT. I AJSOIDFJASOIJ GAHHH IT WAS SO STUPIDLY FRUSTRATING BECAUSE PAGAN WAS /EMOTIONLESS/. EVEN THOUGH THEY SAY SHE WAS "PASSIONATE". SHE WAS ANOTHER BELLA SWAN TO ME.

Bah. I dont know if I will read the sequel when it comes out. /massages temples.

raves
OKAY OKAY. But I'll admit. I liked the romance. /screams

I'm done.
